Excerpt: Don’t let the nit-picking get you down – as evidenced from our 4.5/5 rating, this is a great album with too many beautifully musical moments to name, easily establishing Kanye as the best producer in the game (for the time being). But if either Common’s Be or Kanye’s own College Dropout are being used as the classic standard, this album doesn’t surpass either. As he says on “We Major”, Kanye’s reasoning for naming the LP Late Registration was so he could “take you motherfuckers back to school”. But more fittingly, maybe it’s because everyone is trying to make up for not giving him due props on The College Dropout and giving him the classic rating this time around to make up for it. Better late than never, huh?

Excerpt: We all go through breakups and hardships in our lives, so on some level, there will be moments we can all relate to on this LP. However, only an ego as big as Kanye’s would believe that we would be interested in hearing this type of vanity project which basically explores one topic in one style. Because he is such a huge star, of course he knew we would all be listening, however the universal praise the album has received begs the question as to whether people love the album, or just love Kanye in general. We suppose it’s nice to hear something from Mr. West during the off season (as we didn’t expect another LP from him for another year or so), but we prefer drum loops and chipmunk soul, over 808′s and Heartbreak.

Excerpt: Kanye’s standard will forever be measured up against My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, and as badly as Cruel Summer *wants* to be an album, it still comes off as an uneven compilation record. Sure, managing this many personalities at once probably was a challenge, but with this many characters in the fold, expectations were much higher. By and large, Cruel Summer‘s most satisfying moments we’ve already heard, we just wish there was an equal amount of heat saved for game day.

]]> Teacher Cuts Off Girl’s Braid As Punishment

Last week, in Milwaukee a teacher was charged with disorderly conduct after punishing a first grader after cutting her hair.

Lamya Cammon, 7 was upset, angry, and confused by the incident in which the apparently frustrated teacher cut one of her braids off after she wouldn’t stop playing with them in class. Cannon is a first grader at Congress Elementary School and she told News 12 Reporter Nick Bohr that her teacher used a pair of classroom scissors to cut off one of the braids after she absent-mindedly kept playing with them and told her “Tell me how you play with your hair. Show me what that means,”

Cannon’s mother Helen Cunningham was very angry about the incident and ended up confronting the teacher. She told the reporter that she was “frustrated”. Currently, The Milwaukee Public Schools District said it is going through the disciplinary process with the teacher, who remains in class, although Cammon has been moved to a different classroom by the principal. According to, MPS spokeswoman Roseann St. Aubin, “The main thing is, from the heart of the principal, and me speaking for the district, we’re very sorry that this happened,”

Cammon’s mother said she appreciates the apology but said the district should seriously question whether the teacher should keep her job. Milwaukee police investigated the case and referred it to the district attorney for possible physical or mental abuse of a child charges.When the district attorney’s office decided not to file criminal charges, police this week issued the teacher a $175 ticket for disorderly conduct.The Milwaukee Teachers Education Association can’t talk about the incident, but said stress is not unusual.

Ms. Kelly new album proves she's more than just talk

Ever since Kelly Rowland first embarked on a solo career with 2002’s Simply Deep, she’s gradually wandered further and further from the Destiny’s Child formula. By the time she reached her third solo album, 2011’s Here I Am, Ms. Rowland was on a mission to hit every angle of popular music—from the actual pop genre to R&B and the burgeoning EDM scene. It was her most commercially successful effort to date, due largely in part to Kelly’s appealing to multiple audiences, yet Kelly’s fourth solo album Talk A Good Game is far more defined R&B with a modern tinge. Kelly proves she doesn’t need to genre hop to strut her stuff, and it pays off. Tenfold.

One glance at the album artwork shows that Kelly’s sexy has been well preserved beneath her sheer blouse. And that confidence and sensuality is on full display from the onset, as the LP opens with the blips and zooms of the Danja-produced “Freak.” Kelly discusses a midnight intimate encounter with a stranger and rationalizes it by explaining that, “everybody is somebody’s freak.” Mike WiLL Made It keeps sexy time going, providing delicate keys and MPC taps on the hyper-naughty single “Kisses Down Low.” Any middle schooler with an imagination could deduce that this graphic slow jam—the album’s most explicit cut—has nothing to do with Hershey’s.

There’s a shadow that threatens the spotlight on the 12-track project. You know her as Beyoncé; Kelly calls her “sister” on “Dirty Laundry,” the standout confessional that details Kelly’s subtle envy of King Bey, emotional turmoil and domestic violence bouts. With its dramatic piano keys, the song is open, dark, and beautiful—far more honest than anything the object of her admiration has ever released (though, to be fair, The-Dream penned it). Blue Ivy’s mom lays some actual vocals on the alongside Michelle Williams on the DC3 reunion “You Changed,” rectifying the trio's January misfire, "Nuclear." Elsewhere, the Wiz Khalifa-assisted “Gone,” an update on Joni Mitchell’s “Big Yellow Taxi” (notably sampled for Janet’s ’97 single “Got 'Til It's Gone”), is reminiscent of Bey’s “Irreplaceable” and the breezy Boi-1da-produced “Red Wine” eerily resembles Solange’s recent spacey, ’80s-inspired aesthetics.

Still, this is Kelly’s party, and when she snaps her fingers and rolls her neck over Pharrell’s funky percussion on the Pusha T-assisted “Street Life,” all is right with the world. The album closes with the nostalgic, super-smooth “Stand In Front Of Me,” a spotless ditty made for Sunday morning tidying and summertime twirling.

Kelly Rowland’s Talk A Good Game sets her far apart from the status quo of mass-produced R&B. While she may never shake the annoying Beyoncé interview questions and comparisons, Kelly finally knows who she is and how she’d like to sound. And most importantly, she knows how to talk the talk and walk the walk. —Kathy Iandoli
